Broadening One's Musical Horizons 2

Back in January of 2005 I made this lovely post regarding bands I was "getting into". Looking back some of those bands (Dresden Dolls and Muse) have stuck around and now hold a special place in my iTunes library. Others, like The Mars Volta, I haven't heard in a while. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy their music, I just don't consider them a favorite. So I decided to make a list of a few bands I am currently "digging". Only time will tell who will stick around as one of my favorites. List:

1) Silversun Pickups
Through the process of asexual reproduction, the Smashing Pumpkins reproduced and gave birth to something called Silversun Pickups. Being the bad mother we all know Billy Corgan would make, he drank during his band's pregnancy, which led to the deformities of it's offspring. The new James Iha plays drums, new Billy Corgan has a lazy eye, and the new Jimmy Chamberlin's drum set morphed into a set of keyboards and synthesizers. Luckily for everyone the new D'Arcy is still plucking away at her bass, only way hotter than the original. OK, I'll admit I am exaggerating a little bit, but sometimes I can't help but compare the two bands. Is it because I really miss the old Smashing Pumpkins? Or is it because I've come to the realization that I like the Silversun Pickups more than the Smashing Pumpkins? Their hit single "Lazy Eye" is still awesome, even though I enjoy "Future Foe Scenarios" more. Having seen them at Coachella, I can tell you that the Silversun Pickups can pull off an amazing live show.

2) LCD Soundsystem
"Daft Punk is playing at my house, my house!" "It's time to get away, It's time to get away, from You! To think I used to pity you! To think I used to talk to you!" "We are North American Scum! Ah ahh, We are North American!" "And if the sun comes up, if the sun comes up, if the sun comes up and I still don't wanna stagger home. Then it's the memory of our betters that are keeping us on our feet." Just a sample of their lyrics. LCD Soundsystem are fucking FUN. Awesome funky electro-punk. From their more dancy songs like "Get Innocuous" to their more chill songs like "All My Friends" and "New York I Love You", it is all good. I also saw them at Coachella this year, and I cannot wait until I will see them again opening for the Arcade Fire at the Hollywood Bowl.

3) Gogol Bordello
Gypsy punk! Amazingly fun to listen to. Favorites include "Super theory of Super everthing" and "Super Taranta!" They also put on an amazing live show. Sadly I didn't discover them until after Coachella. Otherwise I would have seen them instead of leaving early during Bjork.

4) The Knife
The Knife are weird. That's the only way I can describe them. This description does not do them justice. The Knife are a brother-sister electronic duo. Their music is very uplifting at times and very ambient at others. They rarely play live. They wear masks to hide their identities. "Marble House" makes me cry (not really, but it's pretty sweet) and "We Share Our Mother's Health" makes me want to get up and dance (not really, but it's pretty cool).

5) Daft Punk
What can I saw about Daft Punk? I'll start by saying that I am really bummed out about missing them when they played at the Sports Arena last week. There is something about Daft Punk I can't describe. They are not your usual DJ act. Is it the robot outfits? Is it the awesome catchy songs they spin? Even if you don't know who I am talking about, I am pretty sure you've heard a Daft Punk song. My personal favorite "Digital Love" was in a GAP commercial, and "Da Funk" is played at sporting events.

I can see my musical taste shifting a little bit into the electronica side of things, but I will always enjoy a nice trashy rock (as in classic, alternative, indie, metal, grunge, etc) song.

My favorite Glenn Quote

I was rummaging through what is left of my old Xanga and I found this little gem:

I think I'm loosing it. I think I've lost it. I be lost. Christ, Im turning into a cheap, fat, beaner, version of Holden Caufield.

That chunk of writing summarizes so perfectly the Glenn of 2004. The lost, anti-social, selfish, depressed, and self-deprecating teenager I used to be. Some might say I haven't changed at all, but they are completely wrong. I might still be lost, anti-social, selfish, depressed and self-deprecating but I am not as witty. The things I used to rant about were superficial. Real "Adult" life just doesn't really lend itself to be summarized so beautifully and nonchalantly. I don't think I will ever be so proud of something I have written or will write in the future.

Tony Snow is a Cunt

(Being questioned whether the DOJ officials' testimony should be broadcast) Q They get to be in public, but you want your guys behind closed doors.

MR. SNOW: There are -- in this particular case, the Department of Justice -- the Congress does have legitimate oversight responsibility for the Department of Justice. It created the Department of Justice. It does not have constitutional oversight responsibility over the White House, which is why by our reaching out, we're doing something that we're not compelled to do by the Constitution, but we think common sense suggests that we ought to get the whole story out, which is what we're doing.

Read the fucking constitution Mr Snow. Checks and balances for the motherfucking win.

I am a failure

When trying to have a conversation with a girl you like in order to get to know her better, you need to make sure the conversation stays lively and informative. For example this past Sunday I had the opportunity to go to lunch with a girl I kinda have a thing for and while I was twirling around with her Ipod (looking at a collection ranging from Missy Elliot to Manu Chao) this happened:

Her: "So What kind of music do you listen to?"
Me: "Oh, you know... Rock and stuff..." (Silence)

I failed miserably. I could hear myself deliver that line as the casket closed on the conversation. There is nothing I can babble about more than my music. That is my subject. I could have gone into detail on how I have barely discovered Manu Chao, how I like Interpol too, how an airbag saved my life (Radiohead reference alert) but I didn't. I said "Rock and stuff." I could have shared the fact that before I found Rage Against the Machine I used to listen to Hip Hop and how I still like NWA, Tupac, Public Enemy, Black Star and Cypress Hill but I did not. I could have shared the fact that I still listen to Korn once in a while, how if it weren't for the Foo Fighters I would be a metal head today, or how I would much rather listen to Morrissey than the Cure, but I did not. There was so much to be said from both sides of the conversation but thanks to me nothing was shared. I basically ruined whatever chance I could have had and I deserve it for being such a "Panicky Pete" (Jim Norton).

I failed in life once again.

Rolling down the street, smoking endo, sipping on diet coke - A collection of random thoughts

Hello. Welcome to the party. Take a seat and listen if you will. I am currently sitting in the parking lot of the Culver City target sipping on a King Size Diet Coke (sugar is bad) awaiting my next class at SMC which starts at 12:45. I have decided to drop my math class --it's too fucking early. It took me an hour and a half to get here. I just can't deal with the traffic in the morning. The new plan is to finish this semester at smc and then try out LACC in the summer. I am running on 3 hours of sleep and feel like I am about to pass out. Some lady from work died. I didn't really know her. The mood around the place is normal, it seems like no one really cares. Coachella fucking sold out! It seems that I am now truly going by myself since the few people I know that wanted to go never bought their tickets. I still have to buy my greyhound ticket. RAGE! I'm actually considering selling my tickets on ebay (since they're selling for like $900 as of this moment) and going to Bonnaroo! But alas RATM prevents me. I would never forgive myself for missing them. I will try my hardest to stay sober on that Sunday. I'm sleepy. I'm trying this whole confidence thing. I hope it works. I had been feeling down for a while but now I feel good.

Coachella 2007

Ever since Rage Against The Machine headlined the first ever Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival back in 1999 I've had the urge to attend. When Radiohead and The Pixies headlined in 2004 I was just devastated. Two of my favorite bands were just a hundred miles away and I was a sad teenager without money nor method of transportation. Well guess what fuckos? I'm going this year. That decision was set in stone when I read that Rage Against The (fucking) Machine (man) was reuniting for one day only at Coachella. RAGE! AGAINST! THE! FUCKING! MACHINE! MAN! I was giddy like a schoolgirl and shook for hours after reading that. I still get amazingly happy when I think about it. I missed my chance to see them live at the DNC in '99 and have regretted it ever since (Old post). My decision was made final once the full lineup was announced: (KEY: Meh (don't know/don't mind missing), Bands I want to see, Bands I want to see and am excited about, Bands I will die for. Of course by bands I also mean acts, etc.)
